Reviews from our patients

“I left with glass/glowing skin”

I decided to book a facial here based on the positive reviews and thank god I did!! Shelby was so thorough in her assessment of my problem areas and what needs attention. I left with glass/glowing skin, every pore was squeaky clean and noticeably reduced in size! I highly recommend Shelby Heroy for all of your facial needs!! She has now gained a regular client.

How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Work?

As women approach menopause, their estrogen and progesterone levels significantly decrease. This decline causes the symptoms that are often associated with early menopause, like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. With regular treatment, HRT increases and balances those hormone levels, alleviating patients’ symptoms and improving their overall well-being.

To start your systemic therapy, we’ll begin with a consultation. From there, we’ll have you go for blood and/or saliva testing to check your hormone levels. Once we get back the results, we’ll develop a customized treatment plan that will meet all your needs.

We’ll also review your HRT treatment plan regularly to make sure you are getting all the benefits from treatment.

Am I A Good Candidate for Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Most patients struggling with hormone imbalances, symptoms of menopause, or symptoms of low testosterone levels are typically good candidates for hormone replacement therapy. We also recommend that you be a nonsmoker, have realistic expectations of treatment, and not be pregnant.

That said, HRT is not for everyone. If you have had breast cancer, uterine cancer, or endometrial cancer, a history of stroke, heart attack, and cardiovascular disease, a history of blood clots, have liver disease, or have had problems with vaginal bleeding, hormone replacement therapy is likely not the best treatment option for you.

To determine if testosterone or estrogen replacement therapy is right for you, we’ll review your medical history, list of medications, and test results.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Results

Most patients start to see results of HRT within a few weeks and continue to see improvements as they continue treatment over the following months and years. The length of treatment is typically around 2-5 years, but some patients continue treatment beyond that time. It all depends on whether symptoms persist or if the benefits continue to outweigh any risks.

What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and how does it work?

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a medical treatment used to supplement or replace hormones that are at lower levels, typically during menopause or perimenopause. It involves the administration of synthetic or bioidentical hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone, to restore hormonal balance in the body and alleviate related symptoms.

What are the benefits of HRT for women experiencing menopause symptoms?

HRT is commonly prescribed to help alleviate menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. It can also help prevent bone loss, reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and improve sleep quality. For some women, it can enhance their overall quality of life during this transition.

Can HRT help with symptoms other than menopause, such as fatigue or mood swings?

Yes, HRT can sometimes help with symptoms unrelated to menopause, including fatigue, mood swings, and irritability. Some women report improved energy levels and better mood stability with the hormonal support provided by HRT, though results vary from person to person.

Do I need to take estrogen, progesterone, or both for HRT?

The need for estrogen, progesterone, or both depends on whether you have a uterus. Women who still have their uterus typically take both estrogen and progesterone to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer, which can be heightened by estrogen alone. Women who have had a hysterectomy may only need estrogen, as there is no longer a risk of uterine cancer.

Can I undergo HRT if I have had a hysterectomy?

Yes, if you have had a hysterectomy and no longer have a uterus, you may only need estrogen as part of your HRT treatment. Progesterone is not necessary because there is no longer a risk of endometrial cancer.

What are the potential risks and side effects of HRT?

While HRT can offer many benefits, there are potential risks and side effects, including blood clots, stroke, breast cancer, and heart disease, particularly in older women or those who start HRT several years after menopause. Side effects may include headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, or mood changes. It's important to discuss your personal health history with your doctor to weigh the risks and benefits.

How long does it typically take to start feeling the effects of HRT?

The time it takes to feel the effects of HRT varies. Some women may start feeling relief from symptoms like hot flashes within a few weeks, while others may take a few months. Full benefits, such as improvements in bone density or long-term symptom relief, may take several months to be noticed.

Can men benefit from testosterone replacement therapy, and what are the benefits?

Yes, men can benefit from testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) if they have low testosterone levels. TRT can help improve symptoms of low testosterone, such as fatigue, decreased libido, mood swings, and muscle loss. It can also improve bone density and overall quality of life for men with clinically low testosterone levels.

What role do blood and saliva tests play in determining my HRT needs?

Blood and saliva tests are used to measure hormone levels and help determine if they are outside the normal range. These tests can guide your healthcare provider in personalizing your HRT regimen, ensuring that the treatment addresses your specific hormonal needs. However, hormone levels fluctuate throughout the day, so these tests are not always the sole determinant for prescribing HRT.

Can I stop HRT once I start, or do I need to continue it indefinitely?

You can choose to stop HRT at any time, but it’s best to do so under the guidance of your healthcare provider. For some women, symptoms may return after discontinuing HRT, while others may no longer need it after a certain period. Our team at The Look MedSpa can help you determine the best course of action based on your individual needs and health goals.
